Hotels in Karnal
If you haven’t visited Karnal, you are missing out on one of
the most important and interesting destinations in India. Due to its strategic
location alongside the corridor that links Delhi to Punjab, the Karnal region
is said to be the “bread basket” of India and home to three of the most
important battles that shaped the nation.
The battle of Karnal in 1739 effectively ended the Mughal
Empire and the first and second battles of Panipat firmly and fundamentally
changed the power structure in the subcontinent. Even before that, a number of
strategic and historical battles including the Mahabharata were fought in this
region.
Today, there are a number of monuments and tombs that lay
testament to the fascinating history of the region and the nation and can still
be explored and admired by tourists. Many of these monuments are protected by
the government and enhanced by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Besides its rich history, Karnal is also home to some of the
best and tastiest food in the nation. Local delicacies such as Rajma Chawal,
Chole Bhature and Parathas are famous amongst the travellers of this corridor
and a welcome stop for tourists.
How to get there
Karnal is easy to reach. One has to simply north from Delhi
on Highway 44 or Highway 1 to reach Karnal. The city is about 130 Kms north of
Delhi and can be reached in about two and a half hours. Recently, several new
highways and railway lines are under construction that will further reduce this
time.
